2023 Year End Executive Director Update

Dear Appalachia Funders Network Members,

As we reflect on the transformative work of the past year, I am thrilled to celebrate the incredible accomplishments we have achieved together, even during this season of transition within the Network and many of our member organizations. In my brief tenure as Interim Executive Director, I have had the privilege of witnessing the profound impact of our collective efforts and the growth that fuels our commitment to fostering a just transition for our communities.

Throughout 2023, the Appalachia Funders Network remained resolute in its dedication to equity, engaging in intersectional conversations within Groups to address the shifting realities posed by climate change in our region. Historically, this commitment has been instrumental in driving initiatives and forging partnerships that fill crucial gaps for major capital projects, federal and state matching funds, and more.

Here are some key highlights of things you accomplished during this impactful year:

"Thriving Downtowns: An Investment Playbook for Rural Appalachia" Launch:

  • The launch of this invaluable playbook has gained momentum, providing communities with essential guidance as they embark on revitalization projects.

Central Appalachia Asset Scan and Interactive Map:

  • Our unveiling of a comprehensive regional community asset scan and interactive map showcasing assets in every county in Central Appalachia underscores the critical importance of Civic and Community Engagement for economic and health well-being.

Successful In-Person Gatherings:

  • Against the challenges of a global pandemic, we successfully convened funders, scholars, and practitioners at our Annual Gathering in Hendersonville, NC, the Appalachian Big Ideas Festival in Hazard, KY, and the Rural Re-Entry Workforce Convening in Johnson City, TN, hosted by the Health Group. These events served as platforms for emerging trends, best practices, and innovative solutions across various critical areas.

Inaugural Narrative Change Pilot Initiative:

  • Our first pilot project aimed at shifting place-based narratives is underway, bringing together storytellers, leaders, and media makers to reshape perceptions of rural Appalachian communities.

In addition to these accomplishments, our Groups are actively engaged in addressing critical issues:

  • The Place-Based Group is actively analyzing capacity-building efforts.

  • Members of the Arts and Culture Group, Energy and Natural Resources Group, and Downtown Revitalization Group are leading conversations to address news deserts and the lack of access to climate-related data that would enable community-based design.

As we look forward to 2024, we are excited to reconnect with practitioners and the Central Appalachian Network, with the anticipation of hosting our Annual Gathering in West Virginia.

I would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Michelle Foster for her outstanding leadership as Co-Chair of the Steering Committee. Her dedication has been instrumental in guiding our network towards success and navigating challenges. Additionally, a special thank you to Gerry Roll for her leadership within the Network and among place-based funders since the inception of AFN. As Gerry and Betsey Russell from Dogwood Health Trust roll off the Steering Committee, we eagerly anticipate benefiting from their wisdom and passion in new and meaningful ways.

Finally, I would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who served on a committee, and particularly express our gratitude to those who served as Group co-chairs. Your dedication and leadership have been integral to the success of our initiatives and the growth of our network. And to Hailey Rudd, our Membership and Grants Administrator for such hard work, innovative thinking, and stabilizing support. May the coming year bring continued progress, collaboration, and positive impact. Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a hope-filled New Year.

In solidarity,

Ryan M. Eller
